Our team had the opportunity to attend the HCCA Managed Care Compliance Conference last month in Arizona, and it did not disappoint. Each time we travel, we try and make the most of each moment to meet new people, learn about the latest trends and regulations, and have a little fun along the way!
This year’s conference had some great speakers and sessions, loaded with impactful insight into the managed care industry. We had such a great time and would like to walk through some of the key themes and takeaways from this year’s conference, and hopefully, open up the conversation for your thoughts! Ready? Let’s dig in.
During the three day conference, a wide variety of speakers were present with key topics discussed such as updates from OIG, new or revised health policies, and CMS priorities/requirements to name a few. Here’s a list of some of the main sessions.
Health Policy Update from Washington with Jonathan Morse, Deputy Director, CMS
Insights from CMS on Program Audits and Oversight by Vikki Ahem, Medicare Parts C and D Oversight and Enforcement Group, CMS
OIG Update from Megan Tinker, Senior Advisor for Legal Review, HHS OIG
Some of the breakout sessions we found interesting were the following:
- Provider Networks: Renewed Scrutiny on Adequacy and Accurate Directories
- Managing an SIU in a Managed Care World
- Compliance Readiness: Beyond the CMS Compliance Program Effectiveness Audit

Visiting a new city and mixing with industry peers should be fun, right? Each time we visit a conference we try to incorporate some of our core values. One of these values is be adventurous, creative, and open-minded. We put this value to the test by going hiking with some new friends from Anthem and Methodist Health System with our health plan segment leader, David Servodidio.
One thing that gives us great joy is getting to hear each person’s story – we don’t just want to be a face behind a table or booth, but to fully be invested in helping others grow and succeed.
Importance of Provider Network Directory Accuracy
If there’s one thing we learned at the conference, it’s that implementing a process to accurately maintain your provider directory is critical for success in 2018.
This was certainly the hot topic at this year’s conference, as new CMS guidelines surrounding the accuracy of a health plan’s provider directory dominated conversation in sessions, networking, and discussion.
We were so thankful to have met some amazing people in just a few short days. The insight we were able to take away will help motivate our team to continue to serve well and develop tools to equip leading managed care professionals in their day to day tasks.
